South African PMI

Internationally the PMI is fast becoming the most prominent economic data release.  As the global economy adjusts to the adverse effects of the credit crisis, combined with fears of slow global economic growth, the PMI is a reliable gauge and an early indicator of the underlying economic activity.  The Kasigo PMI measures activity in the South African manufacturing sector, the second largest sector in the South African economy.

CIPS Southern Africa is pleased to be working with Kagiso Securities and the BER (Bureau for Economic Research) in relation to the South African Purchasing Manager's Index (Kagiso PMI).

All three organisations are of a strong professional standing and have created a strong strategic alliance with a view to supporting the professional procurement community in South Africa.

CIPS will be working with BER and Kagiso to increase participation in the PMI surveys and aid the research to underpin the PMI with knowledge of what happens in the real economy.

The PMI consists of the following sub-indices:

  • Business activity
  • New sales orders
  • Backlog of sales orders
  • Inventories
  • Purchasing commitments
  • Expected business conditions
  • Suppliers' performance
  • Prices
  • Employment

Any reading above 50 for the headline number and the sub-indices, points to an expansion and a reading below 50 indicates a contraction of the sector or sub-index.  The PMI is published on the first business day of each month.

CIPS Southern Africa will be providing comment on the PMI release to its stakeholders and the possible impact of the data on the South African economy.

If you are a purchasing professional in the manufacturing sector and wish to be included in the PMI survey on a monthly basis, contact us on infosa@cips.org.za and we will arrange for your information to be sent to BER for inclusion on the panel.
