The recent Government response to Tackling Exploitation in the Labour Market indicates that the GLA looks set to become the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) and what this change could mean to you, whether in the public or private sector, will be one of the main topics up for discussion at this year’s National Conference.

The UK Government continues to strengthen the battle against modern slavery and more specifically, against labour exploitation in the UK. While it may have passed largely beneath the media radar, crafting the finer detail of a new Immigration Bill has resulted in a number of recommendations that will improve protection for workers within the entire UK labour market.

The Bill is still to clear the final stages in parliament but the GLA looks likely to be renamed the GLAA and possibly also gain direct enforcement powers where it finds workers are being systematically exploited through unsafe working conditions or pay below the minimum wage. The consultation response says the expanded GLAA will gain “police-style enforcement powers in England and Wales to help it tackle all forms of exploitation in all sectors”, not restricted to labour contracted through third parties such as gangmasters.

GLA National Conference 2016 will discuss the very latest developments through Offer Stern-Weiner, the Head of Home Office Modern Slavery Unit including how this will affect you. The Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner Kevin Hyland will also explain current risks and global plans to protect the UK plus a chance to question all of those who are responsible for overseeing the GLA – the Chair, Chief Executive and board members. There will also be an exclusive insight into how the GLA operates, gathers intelligence, carries out inspections, makes licensing decisions and disrupts criminality; organised and disorganised.
