The 4th CIPS Australia Annual Conference - Melbourne
14-15 October 2008, Crown Palladium, Melbourne
The theme for this year’s annual event is ‘The Winning Formula’. The conference will focus on exactly how procurement can gain true stakeholder buy-in to the profession’s wider contributions through genuine goal alignment in an ever changing and ever more challenging complex world? And not just through saving real costs.
Keynote speakers will each address their definition of ‘The Winning Formula’ for procurement to succeed by addressing the issue of how to win genuine stakeholder buy-in, and keep it, in a changing world that is becoming more difficult to manage by the day.
The 4th CIPS Australia annual conference will include:
• Nine international quality key note speakers, including IBM global CPO, John Paterson.
• 24 seminar presentations including four short CPO Agenda Masterclass seminars.
• Four additional sessions after the main conference.
• Professional development surgery for individuals.
• ‘The Purchasing Exchange’ trade exhibition with 50 exhibitors expected.
• Learning and networking with more than 500 procurement colleagues.
• The CIPS professional development surgery is for individuals to discuss their own circumstances privately with 15 minute appointments available to meet a member of the CIPS team.
• Tuesday evening of 14 October will feature the Procurement Professional annual awards dinner, with 10 awards to be presented including the prestigious ‘CIPS Leadership Award’ to be presented by the new CIPS CEO, Simon Sperryn.
• And ‘The Purchasing Exchange’ trade expo of support services to the profession will have even more than the 43 organisations that exhibited last year.

CPO Agenda Masterclass Series - already a roaring success!
9 Masterclasses - 4 Topics - 4 Master Presenters - 3 Locations
Do you subscribe to the latest thinking?
More than 60 senior procurement managers from a range of industries and sectors have participated in the successful schedule of CPO Agenda Masterclasses to-date. Topics focus on the CIPSA professional agenda with delegates relishing the forum to learn from and debate with their peers.
A few classes are left this year, including:
• Challenge of Socially Responsible Procurement
25 September Sydney
29 October Perth
• Fixing the Links in the Supply Chain
29 October Sydney
12 November Melbourne

CPO Agenda Masterclasses are run in workshop format with a maximum of 16 delegates in each Masterclass. Each Masterclass is run by a top class facilitator with real expertise in their field who has been invited by CIPSA to facilitate the Masterclass.
These events provide an excellent networking opportunity and usually include a semi-formal dinner immediately after the Masterclass to allow delegates to compare approaches and discuss ideas in an open format; often with a relevant guest speaker to prompt further debate.
This series has been generously sponsored by Portland Group.

Adelaide and Perth CIPSA Conferences score well
The week commencing 18th August saw the CIPSA Conferences team hit the road to present back-to-back conferences in Adelaide on 19 August and Perth on 21 August. Both events scored high satisfaction ratings from delegates – 98% in Perth, 99% in Adelaide
The inaugural CIPSA Strategic Procurement and SCM Forum in Adelaide at the Stamford Plaza attracted 65 delegates, a good turnout for a first major conference in SA. Featuring a diverse range of speakers, including Greg Tunny, CEO of Australian Submarine Corp [ASC], as well as CPO’s from Lion Nathan, Santos and BAE Systems the conference was scored well by delegates.
Detailed programmes can be found at the CIPSA Conferences website www.cipsaconferences.com.au
On to Perth for the 3rd CIPSA Strategic Procurement Forum on the 21st August at the Novotel Langley and feedback was very similar. Presentations included contributions from major resources players Alcoa and Rio Tinto. As in Adelaide, the comments from delegates were overwhelmingly positive regarding the conference.
Delegate numbers increased significantly from previous years, with 115 delegates attending – a reflection perhaps on the growth of the Perth market and the ongoing receptiveness to and relevance of the CIPSA Conference programme.
Both events featured excellent networking opportunities, with formal seated lunches and cocktail functions at the end of the day hosted by the local CIPSA regional committees, both of which were well attended. Our thanks go to both the speakers and sponsors for their support of these conferences, and to the delegates, who continue to demonstrate strong interest in the content.
Our final event of the 2008 conferencing season is our flagship event - the 4th CIPSA Annual Conference on 14-15 October 2008 at Crown Towers in Melbourne. Last year 560 people attended, hopefully this year even more will attend to understand THE WINNING FORMULA. Full details are at www.cipsaconferences.com.au
Leaders and Laggards events a success
BOMweb Managing Director Jason Ellenport led a series of popular 'Leaders & Laggards' events around Australia during the month of August. In association with CIPSA's State based Regional Committees, the sessions provided deeper insights into the recent research conducted by BOMweb, Vertical Talent and CIPSA on the current use of technology in procurement.
A number of guest speakers featured from leading procurement organisations including Parmalat, Suncorp, National Foods, NAB, Macquarie Bank and Stockland. Based on the success of the series a dedicated 'Leaders & Laggards' CPO Agenda Masterclass will be featured on Day 1 of the CIPSA 4th Annual Conference on 14 October 2008. The session will again feature a range of notable guest speakers and looks certain to be popular amongst conference attendees.
You can download the research white paper here. (This was sent with the August magazine).

Rapid Improvements in Real Time Locating Systems
(Source: Peter Harrop, Chairman, IDTechEx, “Real Time Locating Systems 2008-2018”)
One reason why the market for Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) is growing rapidly to pass the billion dollar mark well within ten years is technology. It is improving rapidly, with new variants for the many new sub sectors of the market that are emerging. Indeed, without new, affordable technologies to cover ranges from centimetres to kilometres and other parameters differing by many magnitudes, the predicted huge market for RTLS that is shown below will not be created.
