NZ in talks on closer defence ties

New Zealand wants an even closer defence industry partnership with Australia as it invests more than $1billion in new equipment over the next decade.

Defence Minister Phil Goff will meet his Australian counterpart, Joel Fitzgibbon, in Sydney today to discuss ways of improving how the Anzac defence partners work together, as well as exploring closer industry collaboration.

New Zealand spends about one-tenth of Australia's $22billion annual budget for defence, yet the countries remain extremely close when it comes to defence procurement.

Ric Imrie visits Auckland

The CIPS New Zealand branch began its 2nd year with 54 people attending a presentation on the topic
of talent identification, retention and development.

Ric Imrie, currently Vice President, Strategic Sourcing for Corporate Express based in Denver, Colorado gave us an interesting insight into the current challenges facing the procurement profession in the international market, how these challenges relate back to operating in the New Zealand environment and how Corporate Express attracts and retains top sourcing talent.

One of key points that came out the presentation was the importance of 'soft' skills such as motivational drivers and emotional intelligence of potential candidates and how these skills compliment the traditional sourcing skills of influencing, negotiation, programme planning and communication.

Category-specific skills knowledge was not necessarily seen an advantage. Given that a sourcing team's success is dependent on their ability to act as a catalyst for change management within their organisations, today's sourcing leaders are looking at process facilitation and strong communication.

Ric also touched on some of the new skills required for success in the global sourcing marketplace, including a brief overview of negotiation planning and the use of e-sourcing.

PPCS repositions itself in meat industry

While the proposed Mega-Merger has been the main talk in the  New Zealand meat industry in recent times... it is not the only thing happening.

PPCS yesterday announced yesterday the company's plans to reposition itself.Out-going chairman Reese Hart outlined the aggressive improvements that would be required throughout the supply chain in procurement, in operations and in marketing to enable the company to lift returns to suppliers.

Strategic sourcing manager, TelstraClear Limited

David Freeman has been re-appointed NZ chair. While David has already taken great strides to increase the awareness of CIPS in NZ in a relatively short time, many challenging times still lie ahead as CIPS continues to establish itself in New Zealand. Previously employed with Vodafone (NZ) Limited as supply chain manager, David has also worked as group purchasing manager with First Group and head of sourcing for Société Générale. Prior to this, he was purchasing manager at Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong; head of purchasing for  FINA Plc; and held management roles at British Airways, as well as an engineering role with Rolls-Royce.

Babs Klyn
New Zealand Vice Chair (Wellington): Babs Klyn

Senior analyst at the Government Procurement Development Group (GPDG), a newly established group within the Ministry of Economic Development and has been created to provide a centre of advice and expertise on best practice government procurement. In the year prior to joining GPDG, Babs worked in the syndicated procurement unit of the State Services Commission (SSC). She has held various roles within SSC, primarily in the e-Government Unit. Babs holds a Masters (Dist.) and a Bachelors (Hons.) degree in Management Studies from the University of Waikato.

Chris Morgan



New Zealand Vice Chair (Auckland): Chris Morgan

Materials manager, Auckland District Health Board (ADHB)
Chris is responsible for the procurement, inventory, receiving and distribution functions. Previously he was ADHB’s procurement manager and an assembly manager based in the UK. Chris has an Aeronautical Engineering degree.

All in a day’s work...

Corporate Relationship Managers Amanda Lamont and Edward Rayner visited New Zealand in November and incorporated two special events in their visit. First stop was the CIPS NZ Auckland end of year function, which was a brewery tour at Lion Nathan followed by a guided beer tasting by Lion Nathan’s brewers.

The following evening CIPS hosted a table of leading New Zealand procurement professionals at the 2007 Deloitte/Management Magazine Top 200 business awards. The evening was a great opportunity for everyone to network with some of New Zealand's top businesses from both within and outisde the procurment community.  Congratulations to all the winners and finalists on the night, at New Zealand’s night of nights for top businesses.

Brigit Corson Essay Winner for NZ
BrigitCorson

Congratulations to Brigit Corson, for her winning essay for the NZ Region. Brigit Corson is the Sourcing Manager for non technology categories at the Bank of New Zealand. Brigit has recently joined the Bank in this new role to grow a team and deliver better access to sourcing capability in the Banks Auckland Head Office.  

In her essay, Brigit tackled the question: Describe how you think the Procurement Profession can gain true stakeholder buy-in and sustain it.

CIPS marches forward in NZ

In September, Corporate Relationship Manager, Amanda Lamont, visited a number of organisations in New Zealand to introduce and explain the CIPS Australia & NZ development activities in New Zealand and get a better understanding of the needs of the NZ procurement industry to enable CIPS to be more effective and better equipped to serve the procurement community in New Zealand.

The visit included meetings with NZ Accident Compensation Commission, NZ Post, ANZ, NZMED, Carter Holt Harvey, NZ Steel, Coca-Cola Amatil, Sanitarium, Air New Zealand, Telecom NZ, Vodafone and Auckland District Health Board.

Since the official launch of CIPS in New Zealand in June this year, significant momentum has been gathering in the procurement space. Having access to resources from a global procurement body like CIPS has meant many organisations have been able to leverage off this in promoting the value and relevance of procurement to stakeholders. 14th June 2007. Inaugural New Zealand Conference proves a big winner!

The Inaugural CIPS New Zealand Conference, held on June 14, was an unqualified success. The Conference had distinguished speakers, including The Hon. Lianne Dalziel, Minister of Commerce for the New Zealand Government, who officially opened the event. Ms Dalziel said that linking New Zealand procurement practitioners into a global community of over 42,000 members in 120 countries has got to be good for
the profession.


The Minister also went on to say that accepting the invitation to open the conference was an opportunity to explain why we need good procurement capability within government now more than ever and secondly to give a quick overview of the Labour-led government’s sustainability agenda and what this means for government procurement practitioners.


Fonterra CPO, Eduardo Teisaire, gave an empowering presentation on the ‘glories and miseries’ of being a procurement professional. He described how identifying and focusing effort on two or three low hanging fruit can have a big payoff in terms of establishing credibility and gaining respect for your skills inside your organisation.

 

Craig Lardner said it was a buzz to be part of something good and that the success of events such at this lies in our hands.  He challenged delegates to consider their own part in the success of CIPS and consider how they would feel if they hadn’t participated as much as they could and found themselves looking in the mirror this time next year questioning whether they’d missed an opportunity.  He said his involvement with professional bodies over the years has been valuable.  He has never left an event without learning something – gaining “institutional nourishment”.  Craig’s presentation used the analogy of a leaky bucket to help procurement professionals explain to others in their organisation why so often the benefits of negotiating great deals won’t reach the bottom line.  “Little holes or big holes, you’ve got ‘em … If all you are dealing with is price, your bucket will leak faster than you can fill it”

To help demonstrate just how important it is to plug the leaks, Craig suggested taking 20 deals that went wrong and calculating how much they represent of total spend.

 

Craig also used the analogy of the solar system to describe how procurement practitioners focusing on price operate in a very narrow environment and were missing opportunities to help their organisation on a number of fronts (and plug the leaks).  He said procurement professionals needed to operate on a wider front “or they will continue to be treated as a molecule of the organisation”.
