Knowledge Bites: Lunchtime Lecture Series no. 1

This first of the Victorian Knowledge Bites Lunchtime Lecture series featured Mr Ian Wheatley, Telstra Executive Director Procurement, who presented on "Procurement - a Leading Edge Approach”. Ian has ultimate responsibility for Telstra's 300+ procurement personnel, its procurement practice and execution, and engagement with IBM Australia. In his information session, he discussed Telstra's procurement challenges and solutions in not only building the world-first 3G network, but also Telstra's BPO with IBM Australia. Whilst Telstra is proud of its leading-edge status globally, it does come with the price of being the pioneer. A lot of lessons are learnt when you’re the first, and the knowledge of these lessons are invaluable.

VIC region finishes the year with a blast!

VerticalTalent

The committee organised a successful end of year event on December 5 with more than 80 people attending.  The emphasis was on networking and getting into the spirit of the Christmas season.  A brief survey was also conducted at the door to get some feedback and ideas on what type of events people prefer and what topics are of greatest interest.

VIC Chair, Brendan Comas introduced the committee members and gave a high level overview of what to expect for local CIPSA events in 2008.  There are quarterly events planned with details to be announced once they are finalized soon.  There will be also be a lunchtime lecture series hosted by Telstra in the CBD.  The first of these will be given by Ian Wheatley, Telstra Procurement Executive Director, on the topic of “Procurement – Leading Edge Approach”. See above.

The committee would also like to thank Vertical Talent who sponsored the event as well as Dolce Lounge and Take 5 and Energise for the magnificent shoulder massages. See the pictures on the logo above.

Andrew Jacob Essay Winner for VIC (and National Winner too!)

A Jacob2.jpg

Congratulations to Andrew Jacob of BHP Billiton, for his winning essay for the VIC/TAS Region. Andrew also won the national competition, and as part of his prize was treated to a complimentary pass to the 3rd Annual Conference, which he flew in on standby from Singapore just to attend.

Andrew's essay titled "Procurement Evolution: The Next Frontier" tackled the question: What are the major implications for Procurement as an increasingly-recognised and fast-growing profession and how will it evolve in the future?

Congratulations Andrew, for being the best entrant in your region and in Australia and New Zealand. Andrew enjoyed a complimentary trip to the CIPS Australia 3rd Annual conference, where he was presented with his award from National Judge, Prof Guy Callender FCIPS.

Well done Andrew, and thank you making the trip to Melbourne for the conference.

Read more about Andrew in issue 17 of Procurement Professional.
