Endorsement and ISO 9000

In September 2001, David Hutchins, Chairman of David Hutchins International Ltd undertook a full gap analysis between the our certification standard and the requirements of ISO 9001:2000, together with some of the relevant purchasing features contained in ISO 9004:2000 - Guidelines for Performance Improvements.

David Hutchins is a widely recognised expert within the field of quality management systems and a regular contributor of a number of articles relating to the ISO 9000 standard for Quality World, the recognised magazine for the Institute of Quality Assurance. He is also author of six best selling management books, including 'Achieve Total Quality', 'Just in Time', 'In Pursuit of Quality', 'The Quality Circles Handbook', and 'The Japanese Approach To Product Quality Management' (this latter co-authored with Professor Naoto Sasaki).

Business Excellence Model

Endorsement from David Hutchins
Following a review of the CIPS Certification standard against the Business Excellence Model, also known as the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), David Hutchins states, “Surprisingly, there is very little text in the Business Excellence criteria that gives much guidance to the detailed organisation planning and execution of the responsibilities of the Purchasing function. However, the generalities apply to all functions including Purchasing so all of the nine elements apply in principle."

He adds, "Because many of the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 are replicated in the Business Excellence Model and others are covered in the original set of questions I can confidently make the following statement:

It is my view that if any organisation can justify a positive response to the majority of the questions in the CIPS Certification standard, they should qualify for a very high score against the Business Excellence Award criteria in respect of Purchasing function."
