  initiatives.

"Excellent! Eric Evans is a “mine” of information"
"Excellent delivery and entertaining"
"Depth of experience and anecdotal examples benefited the delivery of material" - past delegates comments

Aims

Something is wrong. Most leading organisations – in the public and private sector – have adopted the same leading edge thinking and procurement techniques. We all have procurement strategies, category management teams, have benchmarked, downsized, have implemented the many techniques recommended by the consultants and academics, yet only a few of us get the sort of benefits which were promised. So why don’t we all get the results which some organisations seem to achieve? Are we missing something? Is there anything we can do to deliver bigger benefits?

The evidence points to execution – or lack of it.

This programme draws upon real examples of success and failure which have been ascribed to good and bad execution, and delivers a series of hard hitting guidelines on what procurement management need to do to deliver significant benefits from procurement strategies and techniques.

The event will focus on three main areas:

  • understanding the reasons why many procurement organisations fail to get the benefits which are possible from procurement strategies and best practice ideas - reviewing the reasons why some organisations are extremely successful
  • the principles of effective execution which lead to step change performance improvements.

Who should attend

The programme is aimed at those senior procurement directors, and managers who have responsibility for procurement actions. Those who are charged with developing procurement strategy, improvement initiatives; and implementing them.

This event affords delegates ample time for case examples and various mechanisms to be discussed in an informal but highly productive manner.

Programme

9.00am Registration and coffee
9.30am Understanding cause and effect

The opening session looks at some real world examples of corporate failure which are ascribed to poor execution, and from this body of evidence draws some lessons which can be used by Procurement Directors and Managers to improve the quality of procurement execution. The session includes a review of a diagnostic tool to assess whether your organisation is likely to succeed or fail in executing initiatives

               Aspirational goals or average achievement?

There are some clear messages behind the way that organisations with good execution set goals and targets. In this session, the linkages between goal setting and successful execution are explored and extended. Insight is drawn from experience of organisations who deliver step change performance, and those who deliver marginal improvement. The insight provides some stunning conclusions.

Executive style – leadership or management?

Is there a paradox between hands off management and hands on leadership? Should we “delegate and forget” or worry and harass staff who have been given responsibility for achieving results. This session examines the linkage between executive style and success. It points to the steps that leadership requires for success as well as differentiating between management and leadership

               Beating corporate culture

Many large organisations suffer from a bureaucratic approach, slow decision making processes and an apparent inability to be agile in action or responsive to its own need for change. This need not, however, be a barrier to effective execution in procurement, and this session delves into approaches which have been used to create high performing mini-cultures which deliver. Change management and creative approaches to teambuilding and performance management are explored in relation to leading edge organisations.

               People issues

Motivation, teamwork, delegation and leadership are all words that figure strongly in management theories, but are there good examples of these things in procurement? Is there an approach to people management which delivers results. This session explores the people aspects of effective execution. It establishes the learnings from exemplary organisations and translates them into simple guiding principles.

               Building blocks for effective execution

The final session of the day reviews the lessons learnt from success and failure, and creates an action plan for effective execution. No platitudes, no consultant-speak, simply practical; advice which makes the difference between success and failure when looking to implement purchasing improvement. The session deliver an approach to changing the procurement organisation, changing the leadership and management style and changing the results which imaginative strategies deserve.
