High Flyers Demonstrate the Value of Procurement

BAE Systems is a global defence, aerospace and security company, employing around 83,000 people in over 40 countries, and generating revenues of nearly £18bn. Around a third of the company’s 39,000 UK workers are employed in the Military Air and Information (MAI) business which supports BAE Systems’ global operations with the design and build of military and training aircraft as well as provide training, support and information services to customers in the UK and worldwide.

Why CIPS Corporate Certification?
A climate of strategic defence spending reviews and customers’ rising expectations has increased the focus on the MAI Procurement team to provide greater value – which is one reason why MAI chose to work towards CIPS Corporate Certification.

The benefits
Achieving CIPS Corporate Certification Standard has helped to:

  • Demonstrate the strategic value of MAI Procurement
  • Share knowledge and learning
  • Identify areas of strength and improvement
  • Demonstrate to their customers that they have been assessed against criteria set by the professional body for procurement
  • Demonstrate robust processes
  • Highlight the work of the function to support the MAI strategy and enhance its identity
  • Demonstrate the inspired work of the function and take pride in their achievements
  • Provide a development opportunity for less experienced team members

The MAI team is now looking forward to building on what they have achieved so far as they begin the journey towards Advanced accreditation.

Phil Thornber, Commercial and Procurement Director, MAI, commented: “I was delighted when we heard the news that the MAI Procurement team has been recognised by the Procurement professional body in achieving the CIPS Corporate Certification Standard. The team did a fantastic job to recognise and articulate the strengths of the function in our submission which received high praise from the CIPS Assessor and Independent Verifier.”
