  • Offering career development programmes to attract and retain talent
  • Benchmarking against other employers to ensure competitive salaries and benefits packages
  • Offering the benefits that employees really want, not the ones you may think they want
  • Looking outside the profession for transferrable and soft skills and then offering procurement-specific training

Emotional Intelligence is the new hot topic

Just launched in the CIPS Knowledge area is the new JCA Global paper on Emotional Intelligence in the Procurement Sector. To produce the paper, JCA partnered with CIPS to carry out a global survey of our members in order to explore current perceptions within the sector around EI, both in terms of insight and capability, alongside the requirements of training needed to address this challenge. The findings make interesting reading, demonstrating a clear indication that procurement professionals see the value of EI in their roles but don’t feel it is being used effectively by their colleagues and leaders.

JCA have also supplied us with 5 top tips on how to develop your EI:

  1. Smile more
  2. Know and use your strengths
  3. Identify your patterns and triggers
  4. Check in to your feelings every day
  5. Practice listening

Tips from the CIPS President on acting more like an entrepreneur

At the CIPS Annual Dinner 2016, CIPS President Richard Masser talked about the importance of entrepreneurial thinking and behaviour, no matter what your role or sector.

Richard described entrepreneurs as people who:

  • Think independently whilst at the same time listening to what others have to say, at all levels of the business hierarchy
  • Take individual responsibility, whilst at the same time always working as part of a team
  • Take risks, but do everything they can to mitigate them
  • Take best practice from past industries and experiences and skillfully thread this into new situations to achieve the very best possible outcomes
  • Think laterally, vertically and horizontally in the business context envisaging scenarios and desired outcomes that others could never imagine
  • Are never content with the status quo always asking: How can we improve? How can we do more? How can we set ourselves apart from the competition?

 

Richard also went on to describe his top tips for procurement managers:

  1. Have respect for the people you work with, at every level
  2. Recognise that 'noise' doesn't always mean know how or knowledge - never overlook those who have less to say and perhaps speak a little more quietly as often it's their ideas and thinking that are the best
  3. Realise that planning is the key to real success and its absence consistently results in failure whether on a macro or micro scale
  4. Embrace failure and learn from it
  5. Build efficiency, quality and best practice into all your business processes and always strive for continuous improvement
  6. Never think you’ve made it and you can stop looking for new opportunities to improve

Scotland takes the lead

The Procurement People of Tomorrow (PPoT) programme was launched by the Scottish Government in 2012 to address a recognised skills gap in both private and public sectors, with a history of challenges across industry in attracting, recruiting and retaining talent.

The programme is now well established with the Scottish government's PPoT community, including graduates and modern apprentices, already supporting the programme with a specific focus on:

  • Helping to raise awareness of procurement as a career of choice in schools
  • Supporting industry events along with Ministers to encourage more employers to sign up to help create a pipeline of demand
  • Presenting at conferences and actively working on ways to keep the growing PPoT community of practice engaged and supportive of each other
  • Being recognised in short lists for emerging talent

 

The Scottish government's PPoT community are also starting to map their capabilities against the refreshed Scottish Procurement Competency Framework, which reflects the changing landscape and high expectations of Scottish procurement, and directly maps to CIPS Global Standards.

CIPS Africa celebrates the achievements of 78 graduates

The CIPS Africa Graduation ceremony 2016 took place in South Africa on 12 May and saw 78 graduates and their guests attending from Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Zambia, Ghana, Namibia, Swaziland and Botswana, to name but a few.

The ceremony kicked off with an African dance group and was hosted by Ronald Muringai, CIPS Africa Business Development Manager. The academic procession team included Andre Coetzee, CIPS Africa MD, Cath Hill, CIPS Group Membership and Marketing Director, Duncan Brock, CIPS Customer Relationships Director, Amanda O’Brien, CIPS Group Professional Development Director, Richard Masser, CIPS President, and Auma Nnane, CIPS Africa Membership Manager.

Andre Coetzee welcomed everyone and Richard Masser gave a moving and inspiring word of encouragement to the graduates before the formal ceremony began. After the ceremony Amanda O’Brien proposed a toast to congratulate the graduates.

Top five learnings from the CIPS Procurement Transformation in Egypt event

On 28 March, CIPS held a branch event attended by more that 125 professionals at the Royal Maxim Palace Kempinski, Cairo, Egypt, with speakers including: Eng. Ayman Amer, Director of Procurement at SODIC, who spoke about Moving procurement from tactical to strategic; and Amr Abdel Naby, Chief Procurement Officer of BP, who spoke about procurement transformation in Egypt. The event also saw recent CIPS graduates awarded with a certificate recognising their achievement.
