Staying ahead in a changing global landscape
With new developments in technology continuing apace, there is no room for complacency amongst procurement professionals. Those who once were at the cutting edge will find themselves sliding if they don’t continually seek up-to-the-minute training and keep abreast of industry news. One of the ways you can do this is by having a CPD plan in place.
With huge global changes on the political, environmental and economic stages, it is inevitable that these will drive changes in industry – including our own. But there is a wealth of expert information and training available, and it is in our own hands to seek it out and harness it to best effect.
Succession planning and retaining talent are fundamental to an organisation’s success…
At CIPS we recognise that to futureproof the growth and reach of the procurement and supply profession we need to identify our future leaders now, and ensure we nurture and encourage those ‘rising stars’.
With succession planning and talent retention on every corporate’s radar, CIPS recognised that the same forethought was very much in the interests of the profession and membership. With this in mind, CIPS has launched two initiatives this year. The #ibuy campaign is aimed at attracting new talent into the profession and features video clips and case studies of young buyers and the diversity of goods and services that they buy.
The campaign is supported by a website, social media campaign plus an advertising schedule with the Career Matters magazine aimed at Careers Advisers. The website also features material for teachers to download to explain what a career in procurement and supply involves. The campaign has been shortlisted for a memcom award.
The second initiative focuses on progression through CIPS membership. Achieving MCIPS is the goal that our studying members are aiming for – however, we recognised that there was a large gap between this award and one of the next steps to Fellowship. The Fellows of the Future programme is aimed at bridging this gap, giving candidates the opportunity to network with senior FCIPS professionals, plus equipping them with essential soft skills, extra leadership and team building expertise.
The programme was launched on 14 March with a networking event hosted by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and sponsored by Hays Recruitment. Over 60 Fellows and Fellows of the Future heard from CIPS CEO Gerry Walsh FCIPS on the importance of succession planning and then enjoyed a session of speed networking to break the ice. Over the course of the next year, the 45 candidates on the programme will meet for workshops run by experts in their field on a variety of topics including emotional intelligence, what buyers can learn from sales, and transformational versus transactional leadership.

CIPS Study Centre training provider for apprenticeships
CIPS is delighted to announce that our Corporate Study Centre has been approved by the Education and Skills Funding Agency in England to provide procurement apprenticeship training.
Since April 2017, employers in England with a wage bill of over £3m a year have had to pay an apprenticeships levy. Companies can use funding from the levy to bring fresh talent into specific roles or to develop existing staff. At the same time, the government has introduced a register of apprenticeship training providers. The purpose is to give employers confidence that providers have the capacity and capability to deliver good quality apprenticeships.
CIPS Corporate Study Centre has registered as a training provider for the Commercial Procurement and Supply apprenticeship which will include the CIPS Level 4 Diploma. We are working hard to get our first programmes together, with a view to starting this April. We will provide a complete package of support, including training, revision, course books, exams fees, e-learning, mentoring, and one-to-ones with tutors, all designed to get the best results from the apprentices. We will use our network of tutors, all experienced procurement professionals, to deliver a blend of face-to-face and online support. Training will be delivered at locations around the country including on client premises if appropriate.
