Four tips for how to hire the best people

14 July 2017

Feel like you’re fishing for procurement talent in a shrinking pool? You’re not alone.

With more than half (51%) of organisations struggling to recruit procurement talent, Scott Dance, director of Hays Procurement and Supply Chain, offered the following advice to delegates at the recent CIPS Passion for Procurement event.

1. Tell a story. “Often we see a generic job spec that could be any company,” said Dance. Be more inviting, explain why people should join your business and your team.

2. It’s a two-way process. When you are interviewing a candidate, they are interviewing you as well. Are you selling a compelling enough message?

3. Prioritise career planning. With 50% of employees looking to move in two years, and 35% in a year, explain the structured career paths you can offer any potential recruits – to win the recruit and to stop them moving on too soon.

4. Think beyond pay. It is important, but a recent Hays survey found work/life balance, workplace culture and access to training also rank highly for procurement pros. In the survey, almost two-thirds of procurement professionals (64%) said they would consider a pay cut for a more attractive workplace culture.
