Five things CIPS graduates learned from their studies

Graduates of the CIPS standard, advanced and professional diplomas celebrate their achievements this month

Recognising procurement’s value is a recurring theme when reflecting on what they have learned.

1. “Procurement specialists have the understanding and experience to be more involved throughout the whole supply chain,” says Hayley Barritt of Dechra Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing, the highest scorer in the Advanced diploma.

2. Understanding the increasing importance of the profession in business, and its value in creating successful supplier relationships and supporting business strategy has also been a key lesson.

3. “One of the most important tasks facing businesses today is how they configure their supply chain to respond to market forces,” says Raymond Chan of Deloitte New Zealand, winner of the president’s award for achieving the highest score through all his studies. Having filled gaps in his experience through the qualification process, he is confident he now has a more rounded view of procurement.

4. Learning a shared language to talk to leaders is another key skill mentioned.

5. Apart from social calendars taking the odd dive, studying delivered personal gains. “It’s given me confidence to trust my instincts with decision-making. The theories gave me ideas to apply to my job role, with positive results,” says Barritt.

The graduation ceremony was held in Peterborough Cathedral on Friday 6 October, where the graduates with the highest aggregated scores in 2016/17 were also celebrated:

Diploma Award – Caroline Mogere, Kenya Breweries, part of Diageo

Advanced Diploma Award – Hayley Barritt, Dechra Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing

Professional Diploma – William Butler MCIPS, Jaguar Land Rover Slovakia

President’s Award for the learner with the highest aggregated mark – Raymond Chan MCIPS, Deloitte New Zealand
