When Tesla and SpaceX CEO, investor and inventor (how many titles can one man possess?) Elon Musk first started work to dig a tunnel below Los Angeles to resolve the city’s traffic problems, he admitted: “We have no idea what we’re doing.” That was back in January. Only six months later, at the end of June, Musk announced that the boring machine, called Godot, had made significant progress. “No longer waiting for Godot. It has begun boring and just completed the first segment of tunnel in LA,” he said in a tweet.

Musk’s goal, via the aptly named The Boring Company, is to build as many as 30 layers of tunnels below LA’s Interstate 105. Rather than allowing cars to drive through the tunnel, vehicles will be transported on an electric skate at speeds of up to 130mph.
