Slavery statement year two

One company has focused on training sessions and pre-audits as part of the required improvements to statement year two.

In its second modern slavery statement, Haymarket Media Group committed to conducting a pre-audit of new suppliers for compliance to ethical and sustainable procurement standards, and to training staff who source suppliers, products or services in areas defined as a higher risk. 

These two improvements were made to the publishing and events company’s first modern slavery statement, which committed to post-auditing all suppliers in areas of risk.

Haymarket produced its first statement in early 2016. Updates and improvements on the first statements are required in the second year.

Mandatory briefing sessions were arranged by Gary Charlton, head of procurement, for staff who source suppliers, products or services in higher risk areas. Using CIPS ethical and sustainable procurement guidance, Charlton established that this was in use of agency labour and suppliers of promotional items, with indirect risk coming from technology hardware suppliers.

He said: “We’ve produced a supplier code of conduct, and shared our approach with other publishers. The procurement team will audit our suppliers.”

The auditing now looks at:

  • Corporate policies around transparency and ethical purchasing
  • Use of labour agencies
  • Pre-qualification of supply chains on ethical principles, such as employment and CSR policies
  • Minimum standards and accreditations required from its supply chain
