This is who I am: Hannah Bodilly

SM spoke to Bank of Queensland’s head of strategic sourcing

How I got into procurement…

On my placement year at university I secured a place on Peugeot’s undergraduate scheme in the procurement department at their Coventry manufacturing plant. It was fantastic to use my French and my numerical skills alongside my people skills in the fast-moving world of automotive. Twenty years, four different countries, and multiple industries later and I’m still enjoying it.

How I got my current role...

It came through my network. It was amazing to have colleagues who regarded me highly – I was able to move seamlessly to my next role.

My average day…

Consists of management meetings with the senior leadership team for transformation and IT to cover off risks and governance for supplier contracts, writing papers for the board and its committees, and progressing initiatives for process improvements and cost savings. Plus, of course, nurturing and coaching my team to be the best they can be.

The best advice I’ve received...

My first manager told me I had great enthusiasm and business acumen and was getting on great with suppliers, but needed to develop an edge to be able to negotiate and have that serious side to resolve problems. I went on to be a hard-nosed negotiator – a few jobs later they called me ‘Thatch’ after Margaret Thatcher – the iron fist in the velvet glove.

My advice to others…

Experience different industries and different categories to widen your scope in the marketplace.

The future of procurement is…

Exciting: AI may take over some of our tasks, leaving us the more strategic and people elements.

I relax in my free time by...

I love the outdoors. It was the main reason I moved to Australia, so I enjoy travel, swimming and watersports. I am also a keen amateur dramatist.

My dream dinner party guests would be…

Stephen Hawking for his humour and intelligence; Richard Branson for his journey to success; George Michael for his rock & roll lifestyle and his voice.
