Big picture: where there’s wool…

As cashmere has grown in popularity, the number of goats being herded on the grasslands of Mongolia has risen in parallel – so much so that overgrazing is decimating the grassland, leaving brown earth and limited food supplies. Some brands, such as H&M, Patagonia and Stella McCartney are phasing out or limiting their use of cashmere wool in response, and herders are being encouraged to introduce yaks or camels to their herds (their young have fine hair, and the hooves are gentler on the land).
