Capgemini's UK procurement country manager talks to SM  

How I got into procurement...
I worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers (now PwC) in an admin role that included responsibility for buying the stationery and office equipment. Fast-forward 20 years, and I am now responsible for the service delivery of Capgemini’s procurement in the UK.

What was your big career break?
While working for Xerox, I applied internally for a role in global procurement and subsequently spent a number of years managing the European Marketing and Labour Services category spend. 

The best part of my job is…
...the variety; no day is the same. Procurement provides direction and support to the business across all external spend. We work closely with sales on solutions and supplier pricing, we assess new and existing suppliers against our standards and principles of sustainable procurement, and continually seek to improve our ways of working and deliver value.

The future of procurement is... 
…exciting, as change is ongoing. What we buy today, how we buy it and the way we support our customers will change. Technology will provide and model the information we need to procure better, bots will play an increasing role in customer support, the demand for evidenced sustainable procurement will increase.

What was the best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Do it. What’s the worst that can happen?” This advice helped me over the years as I made decisions to travel, work abroad and change my employer. So far, it’s all been for the good. 

What piece of advice would you give to junior procurement professionals?
Focus on the business priorities, become MCIPS and move around procurement categories early to support your career.

Who is on your fantasy dinner party guest list?
Jancis Robinson and Heston Blumenthal. One to educate me about the wine, the other to teach me how to cook.

What is at the top of your bucket list?
I love to travel and the Trans-Siberian Railway is definitely on the list.
