A free set of guidelines for buyers on how to use online auctions has been published by BuyIT, the e-procurement best practice network backed by the government and private industry.

The guidelines advise purchasers to develop an appropriate strategy for deploying reverse auctions, to decide whether they fit in with their procurement and e-procurement strategies and to keep key participating suppliers informed.

"Gradually, best practice is emerging for reverse auctions," said Peter Duschinsky, the network's director. "But as with any new tool, much of the early learning is still focused on strategy."
