Stringent vetting of public-sector construction suppliers' safety records is outlined in guidelines from the Office of Government Commerce (OGC).

Its publication, Achieving Excellence Through Health and Safety, shows how purchasing professionals can use a flow-chart formula to assess suppliers' health and safety performance throughout the entire procurement process.

The OGC guidance is in part a government response to the poor accident record of the construction sector. The Health and Safety Executive is to review legislation with the view to introducing a wide-ranging safety bill.

The guidance is available at www.ogc.gov.uk.
