Bradford & Bingley's (B&B) procurement department has been charged with delivering a large slice of the bank's annual savings target of £30 million.

The 15-member team has been instructed by the B&B board to deliver non-staff savings, estimated at between 25 and 30 per cent of the total.

The team will work with purchasing category teams to win widespread savings, either by re-engineering supply chains or re-negotiating suppliers' terms.

Sandy Duncan, director of group purchasing at B&B, said: "We introduced a supply chain development programme 18 months ago and have already got savings from that, so this is a very challenging target."

The bank is to axe 500 of its 7,500 staff.
