A corporate travel contract has been won through an online auction on automotive e-marketplace Covisint for the first time.

The three-year UK corporate travel contract for Jaguar and Land Rover was awarded to American Express.

Under Covisint rules, the £12.5 million ($18 million) contract exceeded an undisclosed threshold, above which all purchasing decisions must be conducted by e-auction.

Andrew Pilkington, director of UK multinational accounts at American Express, said procuring travel services required a mixture of traditional and e-enabled tendering processes.

"This was the first experience of bidding in real time for all three bidders, but we couldn't negotiate service levels," he said.
