The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is to commission a major study to examine how large car makers can be persuaded to site their motorsport operations in the UK.

A DTI spokesperson said the study would compare motorsport sectors in countries including France, Germany and the US.

Seven of the 11 Formula One teams are already based in the UK, mainly close to the Silverstone race circuit in Northamptonshire, but last year F1 newcomer Toyota set up its base in Germany.

Chris Aylett, chief executive of the Motorsport Industry Association, said top issues included how to improve suppliers and how to find new ones.
