An online trading exchange for the global recycling industry has won a government-backed national e-business award for small businesses.
Global Recycle beat nearly 1,700 firms in the E-Commerce Awards 2002, an annual competition co-ordinated by UK online for business, the Department for Trade and Industry's e-commerce advisers.
It also won in a sub-category for organisations with fewer than 10 staff.
Other winners included electrical retailer Empire EC and Medicircle, which was praised for bringing suppliers to an Internet-based trading site for sports medicines.
Global Recycle provides suppliers and buyers in the recycling industry with an online sales and purchasing platform for commodities such as metals, plastics, paper, rubber and electronic products.
It was set up last year to build on the initial success of Eurecycle, an earlier model for the European recycling industry.
It conducted a transaction for the purchase of aluminium worth $35,000 within the first three weeks of its launch, and has since attracted members from 74 countries.
