Digital Union has launched a "department store" portal for small businesses to manage online content and procurement for their subsidiaries and brands.

The solution, The Cube, is designed to provide central hosting for the online presence of retail, manufacturing and distribution companies, while devolving responsibility for all collaborative commerce to their subsidiaries.

The solutions provider claims that building online content, commerce and procurement capabilities in isolation can be costly and incoherent.

Subsidiaries maintain and promote their brands, while procurement and content creation and management is co-ordinated through the central platform, powered by IBM Websphere.

Patrick Lawton, chief executive of Digital Union, said the service will help companies to manage a coherent Internet presence while balancing economies of scale with local autonomy of content.

"The ability to use one solution to manage e-commerce, e-procurement and content over a limitless number of brands opens up the Internet to a huge number of often-sidelined mid-market companies."
