Ship suppliers collaborate on valve catalogue

About 15 suppliers in the shipbuilding and repair industry will gather to produce the sector's first catalogue for valves from multiple companies.

Bob Bowser, managing director of FcX Truflo Marine, a supplier to prime contractors that is spearheading the move, said the catalogue will have up to 500 products and is "designed to be a one-stop shop" for clients seeking valve makers.

"It's a message for clients and their prime contractors, such as the Ministry of Defence and BAE, to think standardisation in design phases."

The move comes from the first in a series of studies on improving supply chain relations in the sector by the Centre for Business Strategy and Procurement at the Birmingham Business School.

Further studies will be done with BAE Systems Marine, Vosper Thornycroft, and repair and maintenance firm Fleet Support in the next six months.

A study last year, part funded by the Department of Trade and Industry, showed the sector used few modern procurement methods such as partnering.
