Companies from as far away as Australia are in the running for this year’s Kelly’s CIPS Awards for Excellence in Purchasing and Supply.

More than 40 organisations have been shortlisted for the prestigious awards, run in association with SM. The number of entries to the awards, which are now in their fourth year, were up by 70 per cent on 2001.

Some organisations, such as HM Prison Service, BT, the Environment Agency, Cable & Wireless, BAE Systems, and the Australian national telecommunications company Telstra, have been shortlisted for more than one category.

The most hotly contested categories have each attracted six organisations to their shortlists, announced this week.

Local government and health and education will be contested by Kent County Constabulary, Salisbury Healthcare NHS Trust, Northumberland Suppliers, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Cambridgeshire County Council, and Eastern Shires Purchasing Organisation.

In the best purchaser-supplier partnership category, Lloyds TSB and TNT Carousel, Uponor and Transco, BT, Lucent Technologies, BAA Heathrow, and BOC and Sureflow are on the shortlist.

Winners for each of the 13 categories and the overall winner will be announced at a gala dinner hosted by BBC Newsnight presenter Jeremy Vine at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 6 November. Peter Smith, chair of the judging panel and director of procurement services at Shreeveport Management Consultants, said: “The quality of entries was exceptional this year. The awards evening promises to live up to expectations.”

The awards are sponsored by All-Star Purchasing, Ariba, Accenture and QP Group.
