Agile Software is aiming to encourage more collaboration between sourcing professionals, engineers and designers with the launch of its latest cost management application.

Product Cost Management 8.5 integrates direct materials sourcing software with design and development records.

It also provides multi-tier supplier cost management across design, engineering and sourcing, to expose risks and manage costs with its supplier network.

The aim is for purchasers and sourcing managers to get an early look at new designs by integrating sourcing processes with design operations.

As a result, staff who work in sourcing, as well as suppliers, can let engineers and designers know if a product component is obsolete or too expensive before problems arise.

Aimed at the automotive, industrial, life sciences and electronics manufacturers, the system is already used by Lucent Technologies and electronics firm Manufacturers' Services.

Chris Wong, executive vice-president of products and technology at Agile, said the new offering should help manufacturers to become more efficient by maintaining visibility of the sourcing process throughout the product lifecycle.

"Companies that outsource are able to co-source and better leverage their network of suppliers and partners for lowered overall product costs," Wong said.

"Contract manufacturers can provide differential service within a highly competitive market by responding more quickly to customers."
