Unilever hits target for cuts three months early

Consumer goods giant Unilever has reached last year's E1.6 billion (£1 billion) global procurement savings target three months early.

Purchasers made the savings, more than 6 per cent of Unilever's spend, in the third quarter of 2002. The group's sales grew by 4 per cent over the year, according to its annual report.

The group, which includes household names such as Hellmann's mayonnaise, attributed the success to better communication and sharing of approval processes between regional and global buying teams.

A spokesman said purchasers had been asked to apply the lessons learnt so far to all non-production spend.
