Entries are being invited for the UK purchasing and supply management profession's top awards, which are officially launched today.

The CIPS Supply Management Awards 2003 (formerly the Kelly's CIPS Awards) are open to all organisations - large or small, working in the public or private sectors - that can demonstrate real benefits achieved through purchasing or supply chain initiatives.

Organised by CIPS and SM, the awards cover 13 team and two individual categories. They will be presented at a black-tie dinner at the London Hilton Park Lane on 30 October.

Ken James, chief executive of CIPS, said: "The CIPS Supply Management Awards provide the opportunity to demonstrate and celebrate how purchasing and supply management professionals provide business value and make a difference through their close working with other parts of the organisation."

Last year's overall winner was drinks giant Diageo, which impressed the judges with its leadership programme for senior managers. Nick Bennett, the company's procurement development director, told SM that its victory had been "a great encouragement" for participants and the team that designed the programme, and "very helpful" in boosting Diageo's reputation in the purchasing community.

The team categories for 2003 are: most improved purchasing operation; best purchaser-supplier partnership; best use of technology; best international project; best process improvement initiative; most innovative project; best contribution to corporate responsibility; and best people development initiative.

Entrants for these categories will automatically be considered by the judging panel in one of five industry sector categories, as well as for the title of overall winner 2003.

The individual awards are CIPS Purchasing and Supply Management Professional of the Year and CIPS Young Purchasing and Supply Management Professional of the Year (aged under 30).

Sponsoring the awards are TradingPartners, Ariba, Boxwood, Hays Personnel, QP Group and previous organiser Kelly's Directories.

The closing date for all entries is Friday, 6 June.
