Purchasers must cut through processes and show leadership by making decisions, the opening speaker at next week's Premier Conference will tell delegates.

"Time used to be the enemy of purchasers, but now it is an assassin. We don't have six months to evaluate things," said presenter and business leader Rene Carayol.

He told SM: "Leadership is needed to make judgment calls, to override a process and intervene to get people involved and build relationships."

Carayol has held senior management positions with Marks & Spencer and IPC, and is a non-executive director of the Inland Revenue.

His film on the leadership challenges of Sir John Stevens, head of the Met another of the speakers at next week's conference, was shown on Channel 4 in August.

"What Sir John Stevens is doing as a role model is to demonstrate leadership. It takes guts to make these calls," Carayol added.
