AB Electrolux has created the role of corporate purchasing director to extract savings from its $10 billion budget for direct and indirect supplies.
Alistair Grant, previously site materials manager for Motorola's UK mobile phone manufacturing operation, has been appointed to the role.
He will head six soon-to-be-created global commodity teams and will report directly to Jean-Michel Paulange, senior vice-president of corporate purchasing.
Grant said: "It is surprising a company the size of Electrolux is only now putting together a global strategic purchasing set-up."
Grant is charged with extracting purchasing savings across the $15 billion turnover company, which makes home appliances such as washing machines.
Before working for Motorola, Grant was global commodity director for memory with Sun Microsystems in California.
