OSI Pharmaceuticals, a New York-based biotechnology company, named Hedley Rees as its first head of global procurement.

Rees takes up his position as assistant director of supply chain management based at the Cowley, Oxford, offices of OSI, which specialises in the research, development and commercialisation of cancer-inhibiting drugs.

"I'll be in charge of implementing an enterprise resource planning system and also setting the company's first procurement strategy," said Rees.

"OSI has a classical research organisation structure with a core staff of extremely highly qualified biologists, chemists and other scientists who also do purchasing."

Rees, who moved from Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, where he was director of supply chain, said OSI operates a virtual supply chain, where almost everything is bought in, from base chemicals to marketing services.
