Strategically thought-out supplier development programmes can improve supplier performance by a third, according to Ken Morris, the new senior consultant with consultancy Brian Farrington.

Morris saw savings rise by 30 per cent for two years in the programme he developed while he was supplier development manager at Alstom Transport. He had an annual budget of between up to £50 million.

His three-year supplier development programme at Alstom targeted a small group of preferred suppliers the company felt could improve.

Alstom's worldwide client base meant Morris gained extensive sourcing experience in the Far East, eastern Europe and North America.

Before joining Alstom, Morris was in procurement at Philips Electronics in the UK.
