Dale Stokes has been named as head of corporate purchasing at retail and leisure supply chain and procurement specialist MDA. He will merge its external procurement for its clients with its own internal purchasing.

MDA manages supply chains and the purchase of tens of thousands of lines of goods and services for its clients including Gap, Whitbread, Interbrew UK and Danone.

Stokes, who moves from clothing and homewares retailer Matalan, where he was purchasing manager, will oversee MDA's seven-strong internal purchasing department to find savings within its own overheads.

Stokes spent almost five years at Matalan helping to set up and latterly manage the corporate purchasing department.

"Matalan was a great opportunity to help set up a new procurement department," he said.

"It taught me the importance of encouraging stakeholders such as the heads of IT and marketing to work with us and for purchasing to let them know we are there to help them get better deals."

Stokes was part of Matalan's team that took the overall award at the CIPS Awards 2000.
