Safeway's supply director is to leave when Morrisons takes over the supermarket chain.

Lawrence Christensen has been with Safeway since the Argyll Group bought it in 1987 and had been expected to take a seat on the Morrisons board.

Sir Ken Morrison, owner of Morrisons, had hoped to retain Christensen and Jack Sinclair, Safeway's marketing and trading director, for his board once the merger becomes effective, which is likely to be next month.

A Safeway spokeswoman said Christensen would work out his current contract, which expires in June, "to assist with the integration process".

A further five Safeway directors will also leave the firm when the merger goes ahead. The move follows speculation that Safeway's buying team could be among the first to go when Morrisons takes over.
