Craig Edwards has joined retail optician Specsavers as purchasing manager.

He moves from City Technology, a manufacturer of commercial and industrial gas sensors, where he was a buyer for electronic parts and components for four years.

Edwards joins as Specsavers begins a five-year expansion plan that will double the number of stores from the present 627 in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden.

He is responsible for buying items such as store fittings, as well as staff uniforms and all indirect supplies for the stores, in what amount to company-wide framework agreements.

"All the stores are separate entities, so I don't buy, bring in and then ship out to stores," he said. "I set up contracts with suppliers and the stores draw on them when they need to."

He reports to the director of procurement, Jonathan David.
