Sir Peter Gershon, the former head of the Office of Government Commerce, has joined Premier Farnell as deputy chairman.

He replaces Sir Robert Horton who has retired. Gershon also becomes a non-executive director of the global electronics component maker and distributor.

He was chief operating officer at BAE Systems in 1999 when he was lured away by the government to produce a review of central government procurement.

Since September, he has been conducting a major review of government efficiency at both local and central levels. The controversial review, leaked to the press, recommended cross-departmental procurement organisations and big managerial job cuts (see News, 4 March).

One of his recommendations was to establish the OGC as a procurement review and advisory body. He left the OGC in April (see News, 13 May).
