Paul Andrew has been appointed group purchasing manager at Britannia Building Society based in Leek, Staffordshire.

Andrew was previously at Capital One Bank (Europe), based in Nottingham, as senior category manager for the £60 million marketing services budget.

Procurement is centralised at Britannia and Andrew will lead a team of seven category managers with an annual budget of £80-£100 million.

"I will review where we need to get more involved so we can fit in with the company strategy."

During his three years at Capital One, he also worked on categories including outsourced human resources systems and credit card contracts, and was responsible for implementing best-practice supply chain tools and techniques.

He said that a major issue for purchasers is to ensure that project management is constant and consistent.

"At Capital One, the biggest lesson I learned was the importance of working with internal customers to understand their needs," he said.

Andrew has also worked in general procurement strategy at aero-engine maker Rolls-Royce, in Derby.
