Atherton leaves Met for £300m council group

Steve Atherton, double award-winning director of procurement at the Metropolitan Police, becomes the new director of the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation next week.

At the YPO, one of the largest local council purchasing organisations, he will lead 400 staff with a turnover of nearly £300 million.

The 13 members of the YPO, which was established in 1974, include City of York Council, North Yorkshire County Council and City of Bradford Metropolitan Council. Atherton, originally from Barnsley, will be based in Wakefield.

He has worked at the Met for two and a half years and was last month named CIPS Purchasing and Supply Management Professional of the Year award, with his team at the Met named most improved purchasing operation. Awards features: Met Police Steve Atherton
