Rok Property Solutions has taken on its first supply chain director to seek greater procurement efficiencies at more than 20 of its regional and local offices.
Jane Gibbs will influence a £400 million budget at the company, which designs, builds and maintains properties, including social housing.
"The challenge is to harness the company's buying power despite it not being centralised," she said. "The supply chain needs to have a co-ordinated approach to create more efficiencies."
Gibbs, who becomes vice-president of CIPS next month, is considering the introduction of purchasing cards and supplier rationalisation. She said she would raise the profile of procurement and involve more people at every level in strategy initiatives.
This would include harnessing their knowledge of local and regional markets for better contracts throughout the company.
She said this would give purchasers at a regional level more say in core business activities.
Gibbs was previously supply chain managing director at CeDo, a household products manufacturer that also operated a successful decentralised approach.
