A report designed to help buyers "cut through the clutter" of an increasingly crowded e-sourcing market has concluded that Ariba, Emptoris and Verticalnet have the best systems.

Technology firm Forrester Research evaluated 12 suppliers of e-sourcing tools against 127 criteria in The Forrester Wave: eSourcing Suites Q4 2005.

Andrew Bartels, Forrester analyst and author of the report, said Ariba was a "pioneer" of e-sourcing and continued to be a market leader, but that it was closely followed by Emptoris and Verticalnet.

He said: "Overall, Ariba's product has strong supplier discovery, reverse auctions, requests, and sourcing activity as well as very good integration and hosted options. On the other hand its functions are still slightly behind Emptoris and, in spend analysis, behind Verticalnet."

Bartels said Ariba's products were especially suited to buyers from firms that are not yet experts in sourcing, or had a collection of different systems and operations. Whereas solutions provided by Verticalnet or Emptoris would suit buyers that needed sophisticated spend analysis and supplier assessment.
