Average purchaser remuneration has fallen slightly, according to the latest salary survey from recruitment consultancy Purcon.

It analysed results from 1,180 people on its database over the six months between March and September. The average salary level across six grades, ranging from assistant buyers to purchasing directors, was £37,416. This is a 0.7 per cent fall on the figure recorded in the previous survey.

An increase of 8.4 per cent was noted for entry-level positions, while the most senior roles saw a drop in salary for the past six months of 5.4 per cent.

However, Jenny Cooke, head of Purcon's compensation and benefits division, who compiled the survey, said the results should be treated with caution since they were not comparing like-for-like samples.

Cooke added that, in the six- month period, bonus payouts appear to have increased, but are being paid to fewer employees. This trend was more apparent at lower grades, such as buyer and senior buyer.

London salaries remain among the highest for many levels, with the financial services sector one of the highest paying.

According to a survey of public- sector salaries by Hays Purchasing in November, buyers are closing the pay gap with their private sector peers. It said heads of procurement have seen wages rise by 17 per cent in the past year, to an average of £58,412. This is 10 per cent higher than private- sector peers, who earn around £52,992, but lower than the average of £61,500 in manufacturing.

The Purchasing & Supply Rewards survey, from CIPS and Croner Reward, showed purchasers at senior and middle management receive higher average basic salaries than those in comparable business functions.
