Mark Anderson has joined Research International to lead the company's new global client procurement function.
RI, part of the global marketing and advertising group WPP, carries out market research for retailers around the world.
He advises the company when its account teams meet purchasers who are involved in hiring research organisations.
"I work with our account director to develop relationships with our clients' purchasing teams, who are increasingly active in the markets we compete in."
If RI decides to take part in a formal tender process, he will offer advice on how to proceed.
This could include responding to requests for quotes or proposals, entering e-auctions, the implications of being on a client's preferred supplier list, or considering strategic partnerships.
Anderson, who was previously at Barclays Bank for six years, said the move made him a "gamekeeper turned poacher".
He was latterly procurement market manager at the bank, where he oversaw a budget of about £250 million. His main area was buying professional services.
