The merger of the Institute of Travel Management and the US-based Association of Corporate Travel Executives is to go ahead after ITM members gave the move the green light.

The merger will see the ITM become the ACTE region for the UK and Ireland. There is no date set yet for completion.

Fifty-one per cent of 1,000 ITM members, of whom 60 per cent are buyers, voted in an on-line poll at the end of last month.

The vote was overwhelmingly in favour, with 81 per cent of buyers and 98 per cent of suppliers opting for the merger.

Tom Stone, ITM chairman, welcomed the result: "The board felt from the outset that this was the right move for ITM and the message has come back loud and clear."

Following the merger, the ACTE will have around 3,500 members globally, of which 40 per cent are buyers.
