Keith Blake, head of procurement strategy, told the detailed information the new system provides on spending habits will also help purchasing staff reach better deals with suppliers.

"It gives us a lot of information we never had before," he said. "We can see how many pairs of shoes and in what size we have bought in the past year. This historical data gives us a better idea of what is needed when we negotiate our contracts with suppliers."

The authority is the largest fire service in the country, the third- largest globally, and spends £55 million through its e-procurement system each year. It is the first in the world to use the upgraded e-procurement product from SSA Financial Management.

The software links London's 111 fire stations to the central procurement unit, which receives around 80,000 requisitions and 45,000 orders a year.
