Dr Javid Karim has been appointed to the newly-created role of vice- president of procurement at Swiss-owned aircraft maintenance firm SR Technics.
He will be responsible for establishing a central purchasing department for SR Technics and FLS Aerospace.
Despite acquiring aircraft maintenance firm FLS Aerospace in June 2004, the two firms' procurement functions continued to act separately, with little co-ordination between them, Karim told SM
"My role is to bring together a new group procurement structure to extract benefits from joint sourcing of major direct and indirect categories because we have effectively doubled our purchasing power," he said.
SR Technics employs 4,700 staff and provides airline maintenance at Stansted, Zurich, Dublin and London Heathrow airports. It has an annual spend of around $650 million (£362 million).
Karim plans to halve its 8,000 suppliers, and recruit people for strategic sourcing roles in the UK and Switzerland.
"We intend to build upon existing procurement expertise in the business and implement strategies to improve compliance with preferred suppliers," he said.
