Portsmouth City Council's procurement department has launched an electronic tool to help contractors and suppliers work together more effectively.

The e-business builder website provides a place for contractors to post requirements and sub-contracting opportunities. An online directory also enables businesses to advertise their goods and services and converts the information into a database for contractors to source supplies and work partners.

The authority hopes this will help smaller local businesses to seize job opportunities. The site is not limited to those already working with the council.

Stephen de Boise, corporate contracts officer at the authority, told SM: "As far as we're aware we're the only council to set up a site that allows business partners to advertise their requirements."

Contractors believe it will make it easier and quicker for them to identify suitable companies to work with. One said: "It will also encourage businesses of all sizes to talk to and support each other."

The site can be found at www.ebusinessbuilder.org.uk
