The John Lewis Partnership has appointed Mark Williamson to the management board for supermarket chain Waitrose, and to the post of supply chain director.

Williamson is currently Waitrose's head of buying - bakery, grocery and wines. He will take up his new post on 15 April.

When he joined the partnership in June 2004, Williamson was head of buying - grocery. He took on further responsibility for wines, beers, spirits and bakery in April the following year. Previous roles include procurement director and trading director at Sainsbury's.

Following the appointment, Williamson said Waitrose had "ambitious plans" to expand the business and the supply chain strategy would be a critical factor in this.

He takes over from Tony Solomons, who was made customer development director at Waitrose at the end of January.
