Two Italian procurement chiefs have set up a group to increase awareness of sustainable procurement in the country.

Acquisti & Sostenibilità (purchasing and sustainability) will provide information, training and support to firms and individuals who want to learn about sustainable procurement.

The founders of the group are Luca Guzzabocca, director of procurement for southern, eastern, central and northern Europe at GlaxoSmithKline, and Angelo Spina, an interim manager who recently worked at airline Alitalia.

Guzzabocca said although the profile of sustainability had risen, it had not yet reached procurement professionals in Italy. "There is an awareness from the media, because everybody is talking about global warming and pollution, and many companies have corporate social responsibility programmes. But awareness in the supply chain and procurement is very low and we want to bridge that gap."

He added the group would not simply look at "green" procurement, but cover all aspects, including ethical sourcing and social and community development. It is not limiting its membership to buyers but is encouraging academics, suppliers and other CSR stakeholders to get involved.

The not-for-profit group is partnering with the UK-based Action Sustainability to share information, and Altis, the business school of the University of Sacred Heart in Milan. It will run its first training sessions this autumn.
