Whitehall has taken "an important step in the process of transforming government procurement" with the publication last week of the first three Procurement Capability Review (PCR) reports. They cover the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Education and Skills (as was).

The reports identify areas for improvement and produce plans to address those areas. According to Nigel Smith, OGC chief executive, "this should lead to real change".

The OGC added that the range of challenges the departments faced means there is "no single, simple solution" to them.

The second group of PCRs will include the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Department for Transport and Department for International Development. The findings will be published in summer 2008.
